Moving & Packing Tips
Find out about your buildings moving regulations and book your service elevator as soon as possible. If your moving out of an apartment or condo, make sure you know if your building has any regulations about moving in/out, such as days or times of day when tenants are forbidden to move. If you will need to use your building’s service elevator, make sure to reserve it in advance! Reserve your storage locker in advance. If your moving into storage, make sure to book your locker in advance. If possible, pick up the keys in advance too! Find out what time you will get the keys from your real estate agent or lawyer. If you are moving on the closing date for your new house or condo, make sure you know what time you will be getting the keys, so you can avoid delays in your move. Don’t over pack your boxes. Extra large, extra heavy boxes are hard to move, hard to stack, and may well break under their own weight! Use medium sized boxes instead; the movers can easily stack and move 3-5 medium sized boxes at a time making them the faster, easier choice. Contractors bags instead of garbage bags. Clothes and other soft items can easily be put into garbage bags instead of boxes for your move. But many garbage bags lack strength and can tear open! For extra security, try contractors bags instead. Label your boxes. You’ve heard this one before, but many people still don’t bother! Label your boxes clearly, and the movers will know exactly where to put them at your destination. Block off parking as close as possible. If you can, then make sure to block off parking as close as possible to your door. You can try putting out your garbage cans, your own car, or ask a neighbor for help. |
